Newspapers  :  The first form of mass media started after the printing press was invented in Germany in 1450. Many copies of simple newspapers and posters were quickly printed, which could then be distributed to many people.

The oldest literary monument of the Anglo-Saxon period is the old Germanic legend about Beowulf (from the 8th century). This heroic poem is about the strong and courageous pagan hero Beowulf. During the middle Ages, the Roman Catholic Church was strongly criticized by John Wycliffe (1320 - 1384), a professor at Oxford University. With his students he translated the whole Bible into English. He influences Master Jon Huss and our Hussite movement very much.

Britain is a beautiful Country with many places of interest, attractive countryside and a temperate, humid climate. Its winters are mild and summers are not very hot. It rains a lot and the grass is greener than in Central Europe. The average temperature ranges from 4 degrees Celsius in winter to 16 degrees in summer, extremes are rare.

The first people to inhabit the British Isles came from Europe. They lived in the south England.  Stonehenge, a huge circle of standing stones, was built by these early inhabitants.

The United States of America is a federation of 50 states with a total area of about 9 and 1/2 million square kilometers. The country covers nearly the same area as au of Europe. It extends over more than one third of the North American continent and is the fourth largest country in the world after Russia, Canada and China.

The television belongs to the most popular media in the world. There are about 1000 channels. Each country has different channels, but there are some channels, which you can see anywhere. Sometimes they are a little bit different, but the main reason, why are the there is same. To these channels belong MTV, the world most popular music channel, CNN; there are just news, which are going on in the world and some educational channels.

The Prague is the capital of the Czech Republic, the seat of the President, government and parliament and the political, cultural and economic centre of the country.

Great Britain is situated in the British Isles. It consists of three parts: England, Wales and Scotland. The British Isles are situated in the north-east of the Atlantic Ocean and they involve also Ireland, the Hebrides, The Orkneys, the Shetlands and many others (Isle of Man, Channel Islands).

England has a big heritage of gifted writers and artisans. John Wycliffe (1320-1384), a professor at Oxford University, wrote in the middle Ages. With the help of his students Wycliffe translated the Bible into English. His teaching had a strong influence on Jan Hus in Bohemia.

The Czech Republic has a moderate continental climate. There are some differences between summer and winter but they are not so big. A year is divided into four seasons; spring, summer, autumn (fall) and winter. Each season lasts about three months and is attractive in some way.Spring begins on the 2nd March. Many people consider spring and summer the most beautiful seasons of the year and that is why or that is just because they usually fall in love in spring and take their holiday in summer.

Almost all State Schools are day schools and have classes from Monday to Friday. The school year is divided into three terms: September to December/ January to March/ and April to July.School uniforms are worn in post public (private) schools and at many state secondary schools, especially Grammar Schools...

This book is about the famoust playwright, about his life, his friends, his plays and his family.

My Cultural Life

I wake up at half past six every day. I stand up and go to the bathroom to brush my teeth and wash my face. After breakfast I go to school. School ends about two o'clock. After school I go home.

In the afternoon I usually watch TV. About five o'clock I must learn. I have a lot of hobbies, for example swimming, walking around the town, being with my friends. But now I must learn a lot because I want to pass leasing examination. So I haven't much time.

Everybody likes different foods. We can go to a store and buy fresh pastries - crispy rolls, buns, bread, or milk products. We can drink cold or warm milk, and prepare hot chocolate. We often eat bread with butter or margarine, with jam or marmalade, or with cheese, ham, or different kinds of processed meat (salami). In some families’ pancakes, scrambled eggs, toast, puddings, hot sausages, or sandwiches are the common fare.

First of all, I would like to tell you few words about myself. My name ...............and I am 18 years old. I used to live in the centre of Prague in my childhood but at the age of six, my family and I moved to a small village near Prague, where my ancestors had lived before.

Prague is a capital of Czech Republic. It is a seat of the President, the Parliament, the government and the cultural and economic centre of the country. It lies in the heart of Europe on the river Vltava. It spreads on the both banks of the river Vltava.

At first, I would like to mention few general facts concerning fame and famous people. In my opinion, being famous means that some person is well known for doing something special. This person can be famous either worldwide (Hollywood actors-Sean Connery..., presidents-G.W.Bush) or just locally (I don´t expect that Helena Vondráčková is famous outside the borders of our republic).

The oldest key event is building great pyramids, temples and cathedrals. It meant that people travelled to visit this places, but it was only for rich people, because travelling was very expensive.

The next great development of tourism are Olympic Games  in ancient Greece. There exist many legend about the origin of the Games. The Olympic Games was one of the first internacional tourist event. Many people from different countries visited this Games.

The Second Worls War is also key event in the development of tourism. But this one didn´t bring anything good. People lost their homes, didn´t have money  to buy food and so on.. After the Second World War paid holiday were normal in many countries.

The next key event is invention of television and motor car. This had important impact on individual traveling on tourism. It opportunity a lot of people to travel.

I had to describe the system of government in Great Britain, in USA and in our republic.So I begin with the political system in Great Britain. Britain is a constitutional monarchy. It means that the head of the state is the queen but she can act only on advice of her ministers. The Constitution of United Kingdom is unwritten; it is based on custom, traditional common law.

-Harry Potter series -  I have to admit that every time I say that my favourite books are "Harry Potter" series,I feel a little embarrassed. Nevertheless, the fact is that "Harry Potter" books helped me to overcome couple of difficult times in my life. I started reading them approximately at the age of 10 and since then I have read each of them really many times. Nowadays, as I am better at English than eight years ago, I read them only in original version.
