Why do people travel? There are many answers and reasons for it. The fact is that for many of us travelling is a true hobby. We live under continuous stress, surrounded by concrete, bricks and stone. We enjoy coming back to green nature because it has a positive effect on our physical and mental well-being. Nowadays we are able to travel even to distant countries, where we can get acquainted with new cultures, interesting people and their customs, and compare the differences between the way of living in our country and the land we are visiting.

GEORGE ORWELL was the pen name of the English author, Eric Arthur Blair. Orwell was educated in England at Eton College. After service with the Indian Imperial Police in Burma, he returned to Europe to become a writer. He lived for several years in poverty.

The Prague is the capital of the Czech Republic, the seat of the President, government and parliament and the political, cultural and economic centre of the country.

People living in the Czech republic usually live either in flats in housing estates or in family houses with gardens. I live with my parents and sister in a flat in one of typical housing estates. Our flat is large and not silent and comfortable.

When we are short of some things that we need, we go to the nearest shop. We should be able to get what we need there. If it does not come true, we must go to a different one. The most commonly frequented shops are food stores. That’s where we go to buy what is the most important for us and it is also the most in demand – food and drinks. In a small shop or stand the shopkeeper himself assists us. In a supermarket we take a trolley or a basket and we pick our food ourselves. Most food stores have not one but several departments.

Prague is a capital of Czech Republic. It is a seat of the President, the Parliament, the government and the cultural and economic centre of the country. It lies in the heart of Europe on the river Vltava. It spreads on the both banks of the river Vltava.

The Czech Republic has a continental climate. There are some differences between summer and winter but they are not so big. A year is divided into four seasons: spring, summer, autumn (fall) and winter. Each season lasts about three months and is attractive in some way.Spring begins on the 21st March. Many people consider spring and summer the most beautiful seasons of the year and that is why or that is just because they usually fall in love in spring and take their holiday in summer.

New York is the largest city in the USA and an industrial port (printing, publishing, clothing). It lies on the east coast at the mouth of the Hudson and East Rivers and covers an area of 780 square kilometres.

The sign “Sport for Health!” can be seen at many places where we go to practice sports. It is true that sports help us to keep our bodies in good physical condition. They keep us in good mental condition as well, for they offer us relaxation and rest. Doing sports helps us lose a few of our excess kilos.

First, Secondary Technical School was founded in České Budějovice in 1939 but then, two years later because of lack of suitable space there it was permanently moved to Písek. Therefore the year 1941 is considered to be the year of establishment of Písek Secondary Technical School. At that time it was specialized in machinery and there were only five classes attended by 207 students.

Official name of this country is The United Kingdom of Great Britain and Northern Ireland .It consists of England, Scotland, Wales and Northern Ireland. Area is 244 000 square kilometres and it has population of 60mil.

The person who I admire is a world-known writer Agatha Christie. I go very often to the library. The first book from her I chose more or less by a chance, in short I liked her cover, her title page. But that book captivated me so much, that I went to the library again and borrowed further book from Agatha. She didn´t stop to surprise me with her novels. I have read about twenty her novels and if I had more time, I would read furthers.

For many people in our country food, eating, sometimes also cooking, is a downright pleasure. There are some people who eat just once a day - they have one continuous meal, others are figure-conscious and try to fast, cut down on some fat and sugar, or go on a slimming diet. For many others cooking and eating is a nuisance and they do not care much about meals. On the whole we eat more than the British or Americans do and our food is known to be less healthy. The Czechs are used to eating many floury, sweet and fatty meals, such as dumplings, pastry (cakes, sweets), fat pork and sausages. Our food should consist of more vegetables, fruit, lean meat, poultry and fish which would supply our bodies with more vitamins and minerals. There is no expression in English for "dobrou chuť", which perhaps reflects the English attitude to food.

An important health issue for many young people is smoking. Millions of teenagers know it’s bad for them, but they still do it. Why? Some say it relaxes them when they are nervous. Others like the taste. Many say it’s a habit and they can’t stop it now.

For tobacco companies cigarettes mean profit, for doctor and health organizations they mean disease. The two sides are fighting a very expensive battle. About 100 million people around the world work in tobacco industry. Cigarette-smoking kills 2.5million people every year. Many of them die of lung cancer. Some aren’t smokers.

When we go shopping, we can go either to a big department store or to the shop which specializes in some extra goods, e.g.:

Cultural life in our town is not so rich as in large cities. In spite of that, there are some ways of spending leisure time. We can go to the cinema, to the theatre, dancing, or we can stay at home and listen to the radio, watch television and read books.

Sport is the important thing in our life. The sign „sport for health“ is true. Every one can select the best sport for him.

The British Isles are in the north-west of Europe. It consists of two large islands (Great Britain and Ireland) and about 5 thousand smaller ones (for example the Shetlands, the Isle of Man).

Children in Britain start school at the age of 5 years. Primary school is divided into infant schools for children between 5 to 7 and junior schools for children aged 7 to 11. Children in infant schools are taught elementary subject – reading, writing and arithmetics (3 R) but most of the time they spend on games and training in good habits. In the junior school the curriculum includes other subjects e.g. English, mathematics, history, science, geography, and physical training.

When you enter a post office you can see several counters: for sending money, for sending recorder letters and buying stamps, for ordering phone calls and sending telegrams or parcels.

The UK is constitutional monarchy. This means that the official head of state is the monarch, but his or her powers are limited by the constitution. The British constitution is not written in any single document. Only some of these rules are written down in the form of ordinary laws passed by Parliament at various times.

In the railway station in a large town the first thing you will notice in the main hall is several ticket offices. There people buy one-way tickets or return tickets, and those who go regularly to work by train can get season tickets. The station clock above the entrance to the platforms is anxiously watched by passengers in the queues outside the ticket offices. To miss a train can be rather unpleasant; the next train may not leave for several hours, or perhaps you will have to change trains somewhere and wait for connection. Another complication is that the person who is planning to meet you at your destination will not know what went wrong with the arrangements. That is why it is better to plan to get to the station early; a quarter of an hour should be enough leeway to allow for any traffic jams on your way there.

Most secondary school are comprehensive schools(střední škola), which offer a general education(obecné, běžné vzdělání). In some areas children are selected (zvolit) for grammar school (which is more academic).
