Exchange Student‘s New Home
Well, welcome to your new home, Peter. Just
leave your luggage here in the hall and I’ll show you round the house. The kit-
chen is over here just opposite the living room and there are also two bedrooms
on this floor. The door on the left is your bedroom, right next to the staircase.
The other one at the end of the corridor is my son’s. Unfortunately, there’s no
bathroom on the ground floor, just a toilet, so you’ll have to go upstairs to wash.
As I’ve said, the bathroom is on the first floor, the first door on the left. And there
are two bedrooms, the one on the right is shared by two Polish students, you’ll
be meeting them at dinner.

Get around
Liverpool City Centre is small enough
to walk around, but there are many black cabs if you
are feeling lazy. Remember that the demand for taxis
rises on Friday and Saturday nights, especially after
11 p.m. To get on a bus, either go to ONE Bus Station
(mainly to the south) or to Queen Square (mainly
north/east). Both bus stations have travel centres with helpful staff that will an-
swer your questions, tell you which bus to get and fromwhich stand. You can buy
tickets in the travel centres, too. For £3.40 you get a ticket for one day in the centre.
Tickets are also available at train stations.

Leaning Tower
The Tower of Pisa is the bell tower of the Cathedral. Its construction
began in the August of 1173 and continued for about two hundred years. In the
past it was widely believed that the inclination of the Tower was part of the project
ever since its beginning, but nowwe know that it is not so. When theworkers were
constructing the third floor of the tower in Pisa, it was already evident, that the
buildingwould end up leaning. So the foundation of the Pisa tower settled unevenly
from the very beginning. Despite of this fact, they decided to continue the building
of it. That was not a small decision tomake, seeing as thework had been going on
for 177 years. The leaning increased during the construction time and in the years to
follow. It was a tower of shame for years to come. The constructor Bonanno Pisano
didn’t like to showhimself in public. The inhabitants found it a shame to live in a city
where not even a tower could be built straight. In the next centuries people started
seeing the beauty in the leaning. The leaning tower of Pisa has established itself as a
main tourist attraction of theworld in the last years.
15) What does the article say about the tower?
a) It has three floors.
b) It started to lean 177 years after the construction.
c) The builder was very proud of the tower.
d) Its construction took almost two centuries.

MARK
Our traditions are very strongly followed and are passed
on from generation to generation.
B
IRENE
Now I know that presents don’t make Christmas. Once
you have lost something, you start missing it the most.
C
ANNA
People think Christmas is all about presents, but it is not.
People have forgotten the real meaning of Christmas.
D
PETER
It takes some time to think up and make all the presents,
and you get so much fun and excitement, all free.
E
FIONA
Christmas is an outlived tradition. A modern woman
certainly has better things to do than stay at home the whole evening.
16) _____ I used to think Christmas was the best time of the year be-
cause of all the presents you get, but after our family moved from Europe
to Australia a year ago, I found out that Christmas without snow is no
Christmas at all, no matter howmany presents you get.
17) _____ I meet with friends in the evening and we eat out. Then we
continue to my favourite club, stay up all night, dance, drink cocktails
and come home at dawn.
18) _____ Our family gathers for dinner on Christmas Eve and we
exchange gifts that we have made. It has to be something we made with
material we have round the house. You would be surprised howmuch
fun can come out of this. A little imagination and being together is the
best Christmas you can ask for.
19) _____ I feel Christmas is about giving, but people think that because
you give youmust also get.Your whole focus should be on Jesus. This was
His birthday so that should be what you concentrate on, nothing else.
20) _____ I start Christmas at my dad’s house and then I travel to my mo-
m’s. My parents are divorced, so I am expecting lots of presents as usual,
most of which I don’t deserve or need, but I will happily accept them.
21) _____ My family came to the USA in 1906 and as far as anyone in the
family can remember, we have never eatenmeat, only fish. After Christmas
dinner we receive a“wafer”and thenwe go fromperson to person, break
off small parts andwish all the best to each other.
